Family Traditions

The mere words of “Family Traditions” makes me smile and warms my heart. It is very rewarding to think of the traditions that my husband and I started when our boys were small to see them doing them today with their families. In this post I will list three of the traditions that come to my mind first. There are many others, for sure, but these three stand out this morning.

First, is our Friday Night Pizza tradition. Every Friday night we would make homemade pizza. At that time there were six in our family and each person got to put the toppings on their own pizza. Yes, I stood and made six different pizza crust. I wouldn’t change those memories for anything. My husband and I still do this 43 years later. What is more wonderful each one of my boys still have a pizza night with their families. I’m sure it might be a bit different – but it’s still a tradition.

Next, the love of the mountains. As a family, we would vacation in the mountains of Tennessee. We would go to other places, but the mountains were a constant. We would hike, drive through the mountains, and just admire the majestic beauty. To this very day, we all still are drawn to the mountains. It’s as if they call to us to come and relax.

Finally, but not the least important is a toy at Christmas for each one of my boys…as adults. I realize they are grown with families of their own, but I still enjoy watching their faces as they open a gift they liked when they were little. For example: this year we got them lasers. Just the little ones that you play with your cat. When they were little, and we were in the mountains they would always get these lasers. Then at night in the hotel they would put on light shows and giggle with delight. A memory etched in my mind. this year- it was just like they were little again. They were flashing the lasers on the ceiling trying to catch each other’s.

Traditions are good things, if you make them to be that way. It is intentional. I challenge you to start a fun tradition with your family today!
