Best Invention!

The most important invention in my lifetime – that is rather difficult. We have been given so many things that are supposed to improve the quality of our lives, but it seems sometimes that it has just made things more frustrating and expensive.

I suppose that since I grew up on a farm and had to use an outhouse for my bathroom needs in all kinds of weather and all times of the day or night. I guess I would say with a resounding. “Yes” that the bathroom was the greatest invention of my time. You might think that it sounds trivial, but trust me you would appreciate indoor plumbing so much more if you ever experienced an outdoor toilet.

I must say that there were times that I did appreciate the outhouse in my childhood. I could go there and be all by myself. It was only a one-seater. What I liked was my momma would take the big Sears Catalogue out there and you could just flip through the pages and dream of having all of this neat stuff. However, that is the end of the kind feelings.

When we moved to the city and our new house had a bathroom with a sink, tub and toilet – well it was like we had won the lottery. It was always bright because it had electricity and you could simply flip on a light. It was warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Additionally, it had a tub. I didn’t realize what a luxury it was to soak in a tub. It was absolute indulgence.

The hardest thing was that it had to be shared among eight people. We learned to work it out and give everyone ample time. My brothers didn’t like getting cleaned – so their baths were as fast as lightening. I wonder if there ever really got washed completely.

In today’s advanced technology, a bathroom may seem a big ridiculous to be thankful for – but I am definitely a big fan. We have come a long way from outhouses and listening to the radio for entertainment. Although, I must say simpler times do have their attraction. It seems like there was more time for family and actual enjoyment of jobs well done. Don’t forget to be thankful for the little things!!!
