How many sleepless nights have you experienced because your mind just wouldn’t shut up? You fall asleep quickly due to being totally exhausted from the hustle and bustle of the day, but sometime during the night you are wide awake. You might get up and get a drink of water, go to the bathroom, and rearrange your pillows and try to go back to sleep. However, sleep is not happening. You toss and turn. You moan and groan. Then you realize your brain is working overtime. What do you do?
Some will just lay there and get angry. Others will get up and do something, like read or mess on their phones. I have found it useful to write down the things that are flying around in my head. If I pull them out and give them another place to live – I get peace. These times of being awake during the night aren’t there to cause you grief, but there is a purpose. If we learn quickly to get up and write it down, we could experience more restful sleep.
Now I’m not saying every time you are awake at night is a time to write down stuff. It could be you are sick, worried about someone, or actually have a sleeping disorder. You will know the difference. What I’m trying to say is that we need to learn to listen to our bodies. You would be amazed how much we can learn what our bodies, minds, and souls need if we take a moment to listen.
Thoughtfulness Action:
Today, as you are going about your busy day – take a moment and listen (in silence) to your body. Take an inventory of how you feel from top (head) to bottom (feet). Then think about the things that are playing on a loop in your mind. They are looking for an escape. Write them down. It may seem like nonsense, but it is out of your head allowing you to concentrate on other important factors of your day. We have to take care of ourselves – no one else knows what’s going on in our bodies or our minds. If you want joy – then choose it!
