Psalms 121:2 (NIV)
“My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
How many times have you heard these lines … “I am Woman, hear me roar” or “I pulled myself up by my bootstraps” or “I’ll step on everyone climbing the ladder to get to the top” … we have all heard or read various versions of these lines all our lives – right? Are they true? Are they efficient? If we are acting like this – how is that spreading God’s love?
I realize that being independent is a good thing, but I think sometimes we take it way too far. We stretch that independence into self-reliance. Then we enter into a new territory where “WE” become our own strength. How safe is it to rely on ourselves, when we can fully rely on “the maker of heaven and earth.” We will make mistakes. We don’t see the whole picture. We are selfish. There is a higher power that is beyond all that we can think or understand. All we have to do is trust His hand.
One more thought for you to consider, when you are constantly relying on “you” exhaustion will set in and things will fall apart. There is a better way. We are to know joy and live it daily. Where does your help come from? Think about it!
Prayer:
Father God, as a people we have become very self-reliant on all we can do, create, and accomplish. We tend to set ourselves on high mountains as the masters of all. When in reality we are tiny spots in the wrinkle of time. Help us to see our place and trust you to help us to be who we are meant to be. I want to enjoy my life and that can only happen if – “my help comes from the Lord”.
Thoughtfulness Action:
Today, I challenge you to think about the times you ask for help, whether it is from a parent, spouse, or coworker. Contemplate that action. If you don’t ask for earthly help very often – are you asking for heavenly help at all?
