My List

Oh, how we complain about the mundane tasks of housekeeping

early to rise, dishes clanging, coffee maker sputtering

the cupboards, they reverberate through the walls as they close

This is just the beginning of the day, much more to come.

A list, one must have a list – keeping us focused – that’s the key.

Getting laundry gathered and started, making beds – not a wrinkle allowed

dust each and every room, get the vacuum – sweep the floors.

Then by the window, a robin I glimpse tending to her young,

sure and steady on the branch – each little one gets some food.

She nestles down and draws them close – rest is required.

A yawn overtakes me – a few winks could power me on.

The list – the list calls out to me – there’s work to be done.

Sleep overtakes me, does the mother robin keep a list

to schedule each and every task, I wonder.

Is my life is way too frenzied to see the simplicity?

My tasks will get done, but maybe at a slower pace

for today I choose to look out my window.
