I must begin by saying I loved being a momma. It was my strongest desire while growing up to someday be someone’s momma. It finally happened over time and it was wonderful. But once my precious babies grew and left me, I forgot that grand babies would soon follow. Oh my goodness, what an overwhelming experience it is to hold your baby’s baby. As those tiny hands grip your fingers and their eyes peer into yours – a spell is cast that turns you into a helpless mass of love.
From the first to the fourth thus far, I am putty in their hands. Each one is completely independent and full of their own special personality. Shawn is the oldest clocking in at a wise five years old. He loves me so deeply. He doesn’t like sharing me with his brother or sister. He is thoughtful and loves snuggling. Luke is a strong three year old that knows exactly what he wants and how he wants it. He loves me too! He is very creative and focused. He too is loving, but enjoys wrestling more than snuggling. Then there is Eleanor, my baby girl. She was born to adversity with Down Syndrome, but that doesn’t change a single thing. She is a happy, loving, and determined little girl. She is still wee so I’m still learning her personality. Finally, there is my Abe. He lives in another state so I don’t get to be with him person to person very much. This makes me very thankful for FaceTime. He is three years old and as smart as a whip! He loves to share all the things he has learned from one call to the next. I miss my snuggles with him!
Now that I’ve introduced these wonderful little people to you, I will try to convey how they have impacted my life. I’m sure that many other “grandmothers” has felt this overwhelming love as well, but for me there is an added blessing. I never thought I’d have children in the first place, therefore to actually have the children to have children is just so fabulous. Holding a little baby, born of my baby is the most precious thing I have experienced. Their little eyes peering into mine is like a little piece of heaven. My heart melts and I would do anything for this child. I love to snuggle, read books, color, and tickle. However, what brings great joy is talking to them and letting them share their thoughts. Their eyes grow great with excitement and their words tumble out so quickly. Finally, I gain great satisfaction when I get a chance to teach, whether a minor thing or baking in the kitchen, and even truths about God. What a tremendous privilege it is to be a “Nana”!
